Maritime UK Solent - Breakfast Meeting

Event Type:

Solent Connect

Date:

Start: 25 January 2022 9AM

End: 25 January 2022 10:30AM

Summary:

To help people in our thriving maritime sector connect with other local businesses and find out more about what others are doing, Maritime UK Solent have established a programme of monthly breakfast meetings.

This month's Breakfast Meeting will be held on the 25 January from 09:00 - 10:30, and you can register for the meeting here.

At our January breakfast meeting, we will be looking into the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh as we welcome Rod Paterson - Deputy Director of the National Shipbuilding Office. The National Shipbuilding Office was announced by the Secretary of State for Defence, in his role as the Government’s Shipbuilding Tsar, in September 2021 to oversee all of the Government's interests in UK shipbuilding, support growth in the sector, and work with industry to improve productivity and competitiveness. The Refresh will be an update on the Shipbuilding Strategy first published in 2017 and, as Rod will set out, will cover the whole of the shipbuilding enterprise much more expansively beyond the 2017 focus primarily on Naval Shipbuilding. There is a great history of shipbuilding in the Solent and as we look to the future and the Solent has all the attributes to be at the heart of a renaissance of UK shipbuilding - pioneering advances in clean maritime and the greening of shipping.

We will also be hearing from Beverley Poole, Director of College Business Centres, based at Fareham College who is joining us to speak about the Skillslabs project. The project is supporting skills development in marine technology, net zero and digital futures as part of the Local Skills Improvement Plan trailblazers. Working across 10 colleges and with professional partners, the project will allow business to inform education and training and is looking to speak with 100 employers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight before the end of March over three sessions (Marine, Net Zero and Digital). All the sessions can be booked via this link, and the Marine industry session is running on the afternoon of our networking meeting - between 3pm and 5pm on 25 January.
