Winning Public Sector Contracts: Support for Small Businesses

All UK government departments have published an Action Plan for SMEs in which they have committed to being more inclusive in their procurement activities. Their Procurement Policy Note is a guidance on the options available for streamlining and simplify the procurement process, with a view to tackling economic inequality and attracting new entrants to government markets.

We are working with central government and business support organisations across the region to help small businesses and start-ups through the public sector procurement process. We want to tackle the obstacles that SMEs face when supplying or contracting with government departments or agencies, and to overcome the challenges that usually prohibit them from applying for such opportunities.

Centralised guidance can be found here including their commitment to pay 90% of invoices within five days, and all of them within 30 days.

Over coming weeks and months our Growth Hub team will be supporting business in various ways including:

  • Providing bid writing workshops, giving an insight into what to look for and how to apply for public contracts. Click here to see a calendar of events.
  • Developing an online community to enable collaboration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to be successful in tendering.
  • Offering intensive support for businesses to assist in developing plans for growth. This can be tailored to include support as you prepare your business plan for the tendering process.

If you have a small business in the Solent region and would like support with public sector procurement, please email us or call 023 9268 8055
