European Transition Checklist

The European Commission has put together a Brexit Readiness Checklist for those European businesses doing business with the UK. It includes information on the following:

 

Importer/exporter obligations

EU companies who buy from the UK and trade goods in the EU market will become importers while those from the EU who distribute goods to the UK will become importers and will to need comply with a new set of rules.

 

Customs formalities, checks and controls on goods

Custom rules will apply to all goods entering the EU from the UK or leaving the EU to the UK from 2021. All products traded will need to have regulatory compliance checks and controls on imports for safety, health and other policy purposes.

 

Rules of origin

From 1 January 2021, companies will have to prove the originating status of goods traded for these to be entitled to preferential treatment under a possible future EU-UK agreement.

 

VAT and excise duties

The rules for VAT are changing for goods and services from the 1 January 2021. Excise duties will also be due for those alcoholic beverages, tobacco products etc. imported into the EU from the UK.

 

Certificates, authorisations, markings or labelling

As of 1 January 2021, marketing authorisations issued by UK authorities will no longer be valid for placing products on the Union market. You’ll need to ensure any products placed on the EU market are correctly labelled.

 

Chemicals

As of 1 January 2021, registrations held by manufacturers and producers on the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals (REACH) will no longer be valid in the EU. You’ll need to make sure substances are registered with a manufacturer in the EU going forward.
