Airbus join forces with us for Maths in Action

09 August 2019

Earlier this month, we collaborated with Airbus for Maths in Action, a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshop that invited maths teachers from local schools to Airbus’s Portsmouth site to see practical examples of how the subject they teach is applied within the workplace.

Mayfield School, Priory School, UTC Portsmouth, Springfield School, Portsmouth Academy and Charter Academy all took part in the event, which saw an Airbus graduate and apprentice speak with the teachers and shared their experiences of working within the aerospace/defence industry.

The teachers were also given a tour of the Airbus facility, as well as the opportunity to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) career pathways and apprenticeships for students. It is hoped the workshop will inspire new teaching ideas for classrooms and encourage more young people to consider a career in STEM.

Rachael Randall, our Business Director & Skills Lead said:

“It is vital that businesses engage with schools and colleges to ensure that young people are equipped with the necessary skills needed to support future workforce needs. Businesses benefit by giving feedback on the skills they need now and in the future, while teachers can receive greater insight into how what is being taught in classrooms is being used in the world of work. Airbus is one of over 100 Cornerstone Employers which are all committed to working with schools and colleges in areas in need of support. The Solent LEP is passionate about bringing business and education closer together, which is why we are encouraging more businesses to follow in Airbus’s footsteps.”

Roy Haworth, Engineering Manager at Airbus in Portsmouth said: “By opening our doors to local teachers, we can show them the wide variety of roles involved in designing and building satellites, which will help them inspire the next generation to look at a career in the vibrant space economy.”
