Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani has given her backing to the inaugural Maritime UK National Awards that we are hosting in Southampton in September. Speaking in London, Ms Nusrat said there was no better time to recognise and celebrate the UK’s world leading maritime sector.
Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani said: “"Our maritime sector is crucial to the UK's economy and those who work in it play an even more important role. These awards will highlight the best people and businesses, and hopefully unearth some hidden gems of the maritime world."
The Solent’s maritime and marine sectors plays an important part in the UK’s economy, contributing an impressive £20bn in GVA every year. £77.5bn worth of goods for import and export move through the region’s ports annually, making it a worldwide maritime gateway.
We are hosting the 2019 Maritime UK Awards, and have been the key partnership body behind developing a Solent Maritime cluster with Maritime UK.
Kevin George, a Solent LEP Business Director and Chair of the Board for Red Funnel, the Isle of Wight ferry operator said: ““The importance of the Solent’s maritime and marine sectors cannot be underestimated. As well as supporting over 120,000 local jobs within the sector it also serves as a key economic driver for a plethora of other businesses within the region, including tourism, retail, education and manufacturing.”
The Maritime UK Awards will take place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour on 19th September, as thousands of people descend on the city for the Southampton Boat Show.
