We are supporting local sewing group Team Scrubbers by providing funding to purchase material that will be made into 500 additional scrubs for Portsmouth and Southampton-based NHS and medical staff. The material was delivered today and this will ensure that the group can continue their amazing work.
Team Scrubbers, coordinated by Lin Gell, has been flooded with requests from desperate hospitals, GP surgeries and care agencies. The group of 130 volunteers has already sewn nearly 1,000 sets of scrubs for organisations like Queen Alexandra Hospital and University Hospital Southampton.
The funding that we are providing will allow them to keep sewing scrubs for local medical staff with enough money to purchase material for 500 more sets.
Lin Gell said: “The work we are doing has suddenly taken off, we’ve had so many requests and have lots of fantastic volunteers, but it’s been hard to keep up with the demand without the money to buy more material. We are all hugely thankful for the funding from Solent LEP and are delighted they have even arranged for delivery of the materials to us. We can’t wait to keep on supporting the heroes in our community, who are taking care of patients at this time.”
Julie Taylor from University Hospital Southampton commented: “We are extremely grateful to Lin and her volunteers for providing additional scrubs to us for use across the organisation at this challenging time. The new funding from the Solent LEP is fantastic news. It’s great to know they will also be able to continue to support other organisations like us and more medical staff in the local area.”
Anne-Marie Mountifield, Chief Executive at the LEP said: “One of the LEP's core ideals is around being Together Stronger, and I was struck by this when I read the story about Team Scrubbers in the news. I was overwhelmed by the true community spirit that they are showing in supporting health workers in this way.
The whole of the Solent LEP Team feel genuinely privileged to be playing a small part in the amazing work that Lin and her volunteers are doing, and we're especially proud that we have organised the first delivery of materials to be made this week."
Team Scrubbers is looking for more experienced seamstresses to help with the demand for scrubs, please join the Facebook group Team Scrubbers Serving Southampton/Portsmouth areas with Scrubs to get in touch.
If you’d like to help, donations can be made through PayPal friends and family to lingell@mail.com or through the Gosportarians who are taking donations for the scrubs.
