It looks to quantify the economic contribution of the Maritime Sector and Portsmouth Naval Base within the Solent LEP region.
The report assesses the economic importance of the Solent-based Maritime Sector and Portsmouth Naval base from two perspectives:
I. The role that it plays as a gateway for trade with the rest of the world.
II. The economic impact of the Solent-based Maritime Sector and Portsmouth Naval base in terms of the key macroeconomic indicators: gross value added (GVA), turnover, employment and the compensation of employees.

We formally launched Maritime UK Solent at the Maritime UK Awards, held in Southampton in September week. Maritime UK Solent is a new business-led body to ensure that the array of maritime assets based in the Solent region are harnessed and promoted, and so that the area continues to be at the forefront of pioneering developments in the sector.

We have established a Prosperity Review Panel to provide expert advice on the development of the Solent Local Industrial Strategy. The Panel were presented with the findings from the initial review of the evidence base as well as the key areas that have emerged from the consultation work. This Prosperity Review Panel report is version one and is being updated to capture additional evidence requested by the panel, which we will publish later in the year.

The Solent Economic Profile analyses and presents a range of demographic, employment, business and labour market characteristics for the Solent-wide area, and in doing so identifies the key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges to future economic growth. The report forms part of the evidence base for the emerging Solent Local Industrial Strategy.

This Solent Heat and Power Strategy defines a vision for the Solent “to be the leading gateway for innovative and sustainable heat and power solutions”. The vision aligns to our broader economic ambitions and seeks to capture the potential for the region to apply its world-leading skills base and maritime strengths in order to become a leading gateway economy for innovation and sustainable heat and power, which achieves a greater level of productivity, attracts investment and delivers growth as part of the transition to a low carbon economy.

Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) across the country have been asked by Government to develop Local Industrial Strategies (LIS) for their areas. These will act as a gateway to future funding to support economic growth. This offers an exciting opportunity to set an ambitious long term strategy for the Solent to 2050 - a period over which we will see significant change and technological disruption. It will re-set the Solent on a pathway to emerge as an internationally-facing, prosperous and confident economy, underpinned by its renowned economic, knowledge and environmental assets.
